The complete guide
Making a clean swage joint in copper tube

A swaged joint is a good joint because it has less in it. One seam instead of a coupling with two, and nothing extra to buy on the van.
Cut square. A tube cutter, not a hacksaw, and take the last turns gently so the wall is not pinched in. A tube that is out of round before the swage will be out of round after it.
Deburr inside and out. This is the step people skip and it is the one that leaks. The inside burr scores the mating face as the tube goes together and gives the braze a path to nowhere.
Match the head to the tube. A head one size out either does not grip or expands too far, and both leave a thin wall at the shoulder.
Support the tube. Swaging pushes; a tube that is free to move takes the push instead of the expansion, and the swage ends up short.
Go in square and take it in one movement. Hydraulic tools do this for you, which is the whole reason for using one over a hand expander on anything above the small sizes.
Check the depth. The swage has to be deep enough for the next tube to seat and for the braze to have a run, and too deep thins the wall at the shoulder.
Clean before brazing. Everything that goes into the joint comes out in it.
