Looking after it

Take the cells out if it is going to sit unused for months, and keep the magnet face clean of swarf so it holds its full rating.

Bending Neck360 degrees, to light and reach round a corner
Magnet Rated To 1 kgIntegrated in the head, as stated by the maker
Three LEDs360 degree illumination where a torch will not go
Aluminium AlloyWeatherproof and shock resistant per the maker

A telescoping magnet with a bendable head and three LEDs, for the bolt that went behind the engine.

Aluminium alloy body, an integrated magnet the maker rates to 1 kg, a 360 degree bending neck and a hook, running on alkaline cells.

A telescoping magnetic pickup tool with a light in the same body, which is the combination the job actually needs.

The head bends through 360 degrees, so the light goes round the corner the dropped part went round.

The magnet is integrated in the head and the maker rates it to lift objects weighing up to 1 kg.

A hook-shaped tool is included for the times the thing you dropped is not magnetic.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

The tool exists because two problems always arrive together: the part fell somewhere you cannot see, and it fell somewhere you cannot reach.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

The telescoping shaft handles the reach. The bending neck handles the fact that the gap is rarely in a straight line from where your hand is.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

Three LEDs with 360 degree illumination is the part people underestimate. A torch held in the other hand lights the entrance to a gap; a light on the end of the tool lights the inside of it.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

The magnet is rated to 1 kg by the maker. That is a spanner or a handful of fasteners, not a cylinder head, and it is worth knowing before you try to lift something with it.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

The hook is there for the non-magnetic case, which is most plastic clips and every aluminium fastener.

Magnetic Pickup Tool

The body is aluminium alloy and the maker describes it as weatherproof and shock resistant, which is a fair description of what a tool that lives in a door pocket has to survive.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Australian Consumer Law's consumer guarantees you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Australian Consumer Law covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Retrieving a dropped part without making it worse

2 min read Industry Tools Company Australia

The first rule of a dropped fastener is to stop moving. Every extra shuffle sends it further into somewhere worse.

Work out what it is before you fish for it. Steel comes out on a magnet. Stainless is usually only weakly magnetic, and aluminium, brass and plastic are not magnetic at all, which is what the hook is for.

Light it first, then reach. The reason a light on the tool beats a torch in the other hand is that you can see the part and the tool at the same time, and can watch the magnet arrive rather than sweeping blind.

Bend the neck to the shape of the gap rather than forcing the tool straight in. A 360 degree neck can be set to a dog-leg, and that is what gets round a bracket.

Do not sweep a strong magnet across electronics or a card. It is a small magnet, but the habit is worth having.

Keep the magnet face clean. Swarf sticks to it and every layer of swarf costs you some of the rated 1 kg.

If it is under a car, do not go under the car for it. Get the vehicle properly supported first: no dropped bolt is worth a lift that is not on stands.
