Setting up a magnetic drill so it stays where you put it

A mag drill is a drill press that trusts a magnet. Everything that goes wrong with one starts there.

Clean the face. Magnetic hold is made through contact, and a layer of swarf, scale, paint or rust between the magnet and the steel costs a large share of it. Wire brush the spot, not just the general area.

Check the thickness. Every mag drill has a minimum material thickness below which the magnet cannot develop full hold. Thin plate needs a backing plate underneath to make up the section.

Use the chain. Every time, not just overhead. A safety chain around the beam and through the machine is what turns a magnet failure into a jolt instead of a dropped machine.

Set the cutter and the pilot before energising. Line up the pilot pin on the centre punch, then switch the magnet on, then check that nothing has moved.

Feed steadily. Annular cutters cut a ring, and they want continuous pressure rather than pecking. Backing off part way through glazes the cutting edges, and a glazed cutter rubs and heats.

Use cutting fluid. The reservoir is there for a reason and the cutter life difference is not small.

Watch the slug. When the ring is through it comes out as a slug and it will be hot and sharp. Overhead, it drops, so nobody stands underneath.

Clear swarf from the slide as you go. Swarf in the dovetail is what makes a machine bind and then chatter, and chatter is what breaks cutters.
