Getting a stuck fastener undone without rounding it

Most rounded nuts are made by the person trying to undo them, and usually in the first ten seconds.
Start with the right size. A wrench that is a size over, or an imperial wrench on a metric nut, feels like it fits and rounds the corners on the first real pull. If it rocks at all, it is wrong.
Use the box end where you can. It surrounds the fastener and loads all the corners; an open end loads two flats and spreads them.
Pull, do not push. A pull that slips takes your knuckles away from the work. Where you must push, use an open palm rather than wrapped fingers.
Give it penetrating oil and time. Ten minutes of soaking beats ten more pounds of force on anything rusted, and heat beats both where heat is safe to use.
Do not extend the handle. A cheater bar turns a wrench into a lever that the fastener was never rated for, and what gives is usually the head of the bolt or the wrench itself.
If it starts to round, stop. Move up to a 6 point socket, a nut splitter or a grip wrench. Carrying on with the same tool only makes the next tool's job harder.
Put them back in the roll. A set of sixteen becomes a set of eleven very quickly otherwise.
